What’s Up In Barbados: Red Bull Global Rallycross

In 2014, Barbados became the hotspot for petrol-heads by hosting the Top Gear Festival – the first ever held in the Caribbean. All the action took place at the newly renovated Bushy Park Circuit with hosts Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond. Together with guest presenters Eddie Jordan, Lee McKenzie and Tiff Needell, they were all on hand to provide colourful commentary for a non-stop schedule of motoring antics. Locals and visitors alike witnessed The Stig and members of the Top Gear Live Stunt Driving Team take to the track in a series of stunts, races and challenges.

If you thought the action stopped there, you’re wrong. It was a race that the world of motorsport was eagerly awaiting, and Top Gear Festival Barbados didn’t disappoint. For the first time ever, Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton, behind the wheel of his Mercedes AMG Petronas, took on Gymkhana star Ken Block in his GRC Ford Fiesta ST on the Bushy Park Circuit.

It was definitely a weekend of firsts when Barbados also made history by hosting the first Caribbean round of the Red Bull Global Rallycross Championship.

While the Top Gear Festival won’t be gracing the beautiful island of Barbados this year with its spills and thrills, the Red Bull Global Rallycross will. Bushy Park Barbados will again host this year’s international round of the GRC series on October 3 and 4, with the official kickoff on October 2.

Back to School: GRC 101

GRC events offer a unique and unparalleled viewing experience for fans at the track. These events are designed to produce the fastest and most exciting racing in all of motorsports.

GRC drivers represent some of the most talented action sports athletes in the world. A significant number of GRC drivers have also had legendary careers in other action sports, from motocross to BMX to skateboarding. Such names include Brian Deegan, Travis Pastrana and Bucky Lasek.

How It Works

The race weekend begins with two rounds of heat races, usually consisting of four cars and six laps each. The field is then combined into two groups of equal size for the semifinals, which are also six laps each. The top three finishers from each semifinal transfer into the main event. The drivers who don’t make it into the main event via heat races compete in the four-lap last chance qualifier for the final remaining qualifying spots. Ten cars then compete in the 10-lap main event.

Quick Car Facts

  • Global Rallycross cars are production models, but are brought up to racing standards after heavy modifications.
  • GRC vehicles can produce 600 horsepower and can accelerate from 0-60 MPH in 1.9 seconds.
  • These cars are built to withstand 70-foot jumps and contact with other vehicles
