What’s Up In Barbados: Food & Wine and Rum Festival

One date that should be marked in the calendar of any foodie travelling to Barbados this year is the Food & Wine and Rum Festival, which returns to the island from November 19th – 22nd, 2015.

“We felt that in our sixth year we would shake things up a bit and incorporate more of our other tourism product offerings into this highly successful festival”, said CEO of the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI), William Griffith.

The event sees some of the world’s top chefs descend on this tiny island, with cooking demonstrations, tasting sessions and glamorous evening parties. Wine experts are also on hand to recommend pairings and explain the different characteristics of each grape, as well as sharing their insider tips on the best vintages to seek out.

Among this year’s headliners are Carla Hall, co-host on ABC Daytime’s lifestyle series, The Chew in the USA; Cliff Harding, executive chef at Toronto’s upscale Sutton Place Hotel; Andrew Pern of the UK; and Chris Cosentino, an American author and celebrity chef of Food Network and Top Chef Master’s fame.

They will be joined by perennial favourite, chef Marcus Samuelsson.  This Ethiopia-born, Harlem-dweller who has fallen in love with Barbados, will also host a special ‘Bajan Invasion’ launch party in his famous Red Rooster restaurant on Sept. 17.

Of course, it wouldn’t be an authentically Bajan event without some rum, and you’ll be able to learn all about the history and production of this famous spirit, as well as sampling a few varieties yourself. Just remember, it’s potent stuff!

Festivalgoers will also be dining from a new menu of events that will commence with the highly anticipated night at Oistins on Thursday Nov. 19.  Flaming grills and the hottest local music will inspire patrons and their palettes to dance all night long.

Then on Friday Nov. 20 the festival heads to the platinum west coast for the launch party at the lush Limegrove Lifestyle Centre.  Foodies can meet-and-greet with their favourite chefs, shop sweet deals, sample hors d’oeuvres and enjoy wine tastings all evening long.

Polo fans and enthusiasts will enjoy Saturday’s a friendly polo match at Holder’s Polo Club while sampling world-class rum cocktails and canapes. Later that night foodies will want to follow their favourite international chef for an evening of opulent dining at select eateries, followed by a rocking after party in 2nd St., Holetown.

To climax this year’s festival fans will encouraged to go bask by the shore of the beautiful Needham’s Point beach at Hilton Barbados.  This exciting all-inclusive beach party will take place on Sunday Nov. 22 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
